Study Notes
Naming Alkynes
- Alkynes are named in much the same way as alkenes, but ending the name with "-yne" instead of "-ene".
- The position of the triple bond is indicated by a number.
- When multiple substituents are present, they are listed in alphabetical order.
- If multiple substituents are on the same carbon, the number for that carbon is used twice.
- The priority for numbering is given to groups with higher functional groups like the hydroxyl group (OH).
- If there are multiple chains with equal length, the parent chain is chosen based on the chain with the greater number of substituents.
- If branching occurs at an equal distance from both ends of the longest chain, choose the name that gives the lower number at the first point of difference.
Naming Cycloalkanes
- Cycloalkanes with only one ring are named by attaching "cyclo-" to the alkane name.
- Substituted cycloalkanes are named with the substituents' names and positions indicated.
- When a single ring system is attached to a longer chain, the ring system is named as a substituent.
- If multiple ring systems is attached to a single chain, they are named as substituents.
Physical Properties of Alkanes and Cycloalkanes
- The boiling points and melting points of alkanes increase with increasing carbon chain length.
- Branched alkanes have lower boiling points than straight-chain alkanes.
Alkanes: Sources and Petroleum Refining
- Petroleum is the primary source of alkanes.
- Petroleum is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, including alkanes.
- During petroleum refining, hydrocarbons are separated by distillation based on their volatility.
- The various fractions of petroleum are used for a variety of applications, including fuels, solvents, and lubricants.
Catalytic Cracking
- Catalytic cracking converts heavier hydrocarbons into gasoline.
- During cracking, hydrocarbons are heated with catalysts to break them down into smaller, more branched hydrocarbons.
- 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane (isooctane) burns smoothly in internal combustion engines and serves as a standard for octane ratings of gasoline.
