Study Notes
Mycobacteria Classification: Runyon Group
- Mycobacteria are classified into the Runyon grouping system with four main groups (I-IV).
Runyon Group I
- Characteristics: Photochromes; produce a yellow-orange pigment when exposed to light.
- Pathogenicity: Pathogenic.
- Examples: Mycobacterium kansasii, Mycobacterium marinum.
Runyon Group II
- Characteristics: Scotochromogens; produce a yellow-orange pigment regardless of light exposure.
- Pathogenicity: Non-pathogenic.
- Example: Mycobacterium gordonae.
Runyon Group III
- Characteristics: Nonchromogens; do not produce any pigment.
-
Examples:
- MTB complex: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), Mycobacterium bovis (M.bovis).
- MAI complex: Mycobacterium avium (M.avium), Mycobacterium intracellulare (M.intracellulae).
Runyon Group IV
- Characteristics: Rapid growers and nonchromogenic.
- Examples: Mycobacterium fortuitum, Mycobacterium chelonae.
Comparison of Groups
- Group I-III: Characterized as slow growers.
- Group IV: Identified as rapid growers.
