Study Notes
- Advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) are designed to help drivers by doing things like warning the driver of potential issues, taking the responsibility off the driver, and helping the driver avoid a collision.
- The hardware involved includes a display, speakers, input devices, and microphone.
- Behind the scenes, software is used to sort out the vast amount of information and reduce it to the levels where the driver can understand and react to situations as needed.
- The blind spot monitor (BSM) is a vehicle-based sensor that detects other vehicles located to the side and rear of the vehicle. Warnings can be any of the following: visual, audible, or vibrating (tactile).
- If the blind spot monitoring system fails to work as designed, check service information for the specified trouble shooting and repair procedure to follow.
- When the vehicle is first started, the outside mirrors displays will come on briefly indicating that the system is turned on and operating.
- The parking-assist system is used to help drivers avoid contact with another object while moving slowly.
- The parking-assist system uses sensors to detect objects in the vicinity of the vehicle, and sends out acoustic or electromagnetic pulses in order to warn the driver.
- The system is activated automatically when the vehicle is started, and is also active when the vehicle is backing up.
- The parking-assist system is disabled if a fault is detected.
- The lane departure warning system uses cameras to detect if the vehicle is crossing over lane markings on the pavement.
- Before attempting to service or repair an LDWS fault, check service information for an explanation on how the system works.
- Lane keep assist (LKA) is an electronic system that helps drivers stay in their lane by warning them when the vehicle is moving out of the lane and then using the electric power steering system to steer the vehicle back into the lane.
- LKA systems use a camera to monitor the road ahead and can detect the lane markings, which include the center line and the right-side painted line.
- When the camera detects that the vehicle is starting to get close to either lane marking, it warns the driver and uses the electric power steering system to steer the vehicle back into the lane.
- LKA systems are usually installed in newer vehicles.
