  • Consists of two numbers, one on top of the other, written at the beginning of a staff
  • Top number indicates how many beats are in a measure
  • Bottom number indicates the type of note that gets one beat

Common Time Signatures

  • 4/4 (Common Time): 4 beats in a measure, quarter note gets one beat
  • 3/4 (Waltz Time): 3 beats in a measure, quarter note gets one beat
  • 2/4 (Duple Time): 2 beats in a measure, quarter note gets one beat
  • 6/8 (Compound Duple Time): 6 beats in a measure, eighth note gets one beat
