Music Theory Exercise Goals

Note F and Interval Study

• The whole note F is used to increase sensitivity to starts and stops.
• A goal of the interval study is to match the second note to the first note.

Articulation/Style Exercise

• A goal of the articulation/style exercise is to match articulation on every note.
• The exercise should include notes that touch and do not touch.
• It helps with individual subdivision during rests.
• It aids in achieving the evenness of sound and volume.

Concert F Exercises

• A goal of the whole note concert F is to retain the “body of sound”.
• The concert F descending exercise is not meant to be played as quickly as possible.
• The concert F around the room should be free of breaks and bumps in the sound.

Chorale

• The chorale is used to help musicians with the direction of line.
• It is not an exercise similar to the introduction of a concert march.
• It does not enhance the marcato style.

Performance and Miscellaneous

• When performing a lyrical piece of music, phrasing, intonation, and contrast as an ensemble are crucial.
• Percussionists should set up a stand with a towel to transition between implements quietly.
• Only band students are allowed to enter the band hall, with some exceptions (e.g., full orchestra).
