- The emotional and dramatic compositions of late classical composers such as Beethoven inspired a generation of Romantic composers.
- Music reflected country’s music & history, emotions and ideas.
- Composers experimented with new rich harmonies.
Early Romantic Composers
- Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was inspired by his musical sister, Fanny.
- At age 17 Mendelssohn wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the first of his many concert overtures.
- A brilliant pannist, Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) composed short, melodic pieces based on Polish dances.
- Chopin is well known for composing the Minute Waltz, which some pianists try to play in one minute.
- Emilie Mayer (1812-1883) used existing stories and poems in her songs, and also composed pieces for a full orchestra.
- Composing pieces for a full orchestra was rare for a woman at that time.
Middle and Late Romantic Composers
- Franz Liszt (1811-1886) introduced the term “symphonic poem” for a large-scale, one-movement piece of music taken from a dramatic play, historical event, or mythology.
- Cesar-Auguste Franck (1822-1890) revived traditional symphony and music.
- Several movements had themes linked to a main melody motif.
- Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) wrote nine famous large-scale symphonies.
- Bruckner allowed his music to develop complex sections.
- Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) rejected new Romantic forms ad composed in the Baroque and Classical styles of J.S. Bach and Beethoven.
- Geroges Bizet (1838-1875) wrote the short-lived French opera, Carmen.
- Richared Strauss (1864-1949) began his musical career composing songs, and symphonic poems.
- Strauss ended his career composing great operas, such as Der Rosenkavalier (“The Knight of the Rose”)
