Muscular System

Overview

  • The muscular system is a system of organs that allow for movement, maintenance of posture, and regulation of body temperature
  • It consists of approximately 640 muscles that make up about 40% of an individual's body weight

Types of Muscles

  • Skeletal Muscles (Voluntary Muscles)
    • Attached to bones and help move the body's skeleton
    • Striated and multinucleated
    • Examples: biceps, quadriceps, and hamstrings
  • Smooth Muscles (Involuntary Muscles)
    • Found in the walls of hollow organs, such as the digestive tract, blood vessels, and airways
    • Non-striated and uninucleated
    • Examples: muscles in the digestive tract, blood vessels, and airways
  • Cardiac Muscles
    • Found in the heart and responsible for pumping blood
    • Striated and uninucleated
    • Example: myocardium

Muscle Functions

  • Movement: Muscles work with the skeletal system to move the body
  • Maintenance of Posture: Muscles help maintain the body's posture and balance
  • Regulation of Body Temperature: Muscles help generate heat through shivering
  • Support: Muscles provide support for soft tissues, such as organs and blood vessels
  • Blood Pressure Regulation: Muscles help regulate blood pressure through constriction and dilation of blood vessels

Muscle Structure

  • Muscle Fibers: The basic units of muscles, composed of myofibrils, mitochondria, and sarcoplasmic reticulum
  • Myofibrils: Composed of sarcomeres, which are the functional units of muscles
  • Sarcomeres: Contain actin and myosin filaments that slide past each other to produce muscle contraction

Muscle Contraction

  • Sliding Filament Theory: The process by which actin and myosin filaments slide past each other to produce muscle contraction
  • Muscle Tone: The state of partial contraction of muscles, which helps maintain posture and balance
