  • Levator scapulae
  • Rhomboid major
  • Trapezius

The trapezius muscle is innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve.

False (B)

What is the primary function of the trapezius muscle?

Flashcards

Trapezius Origin

The Trapezius muscle originates from the superior nuchal line, external occipital protuberance, ligamentum nuchae, and spinous processes of the cervical and thoracic vertebrae.

Deltoid Insertion

The Deltoid muscle inserts onto the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus, the acromion, and the lateral third of the clavicle.

Levator Scapulae Origin

The Levator Scapulae originates from the transverse processes of the upper cervical vertebrae.

Rhomboid Minor Origin

The Rhomboid Minor muscle originates from the ligamentum nuchae and spinous process of the upper thoracic vertebrae.

Scapular Muscle (Rhomboid Major) Origin

The Rhomboid major originates from the spinous processes of the mid-thoracic vertebrae and inserts into the medial border of the scapula.

Trapezius Function

The Trapezius muscle helps elevate, rotate, retract and depress the scapula. It is a versatile muscle with important functions in shoulder movement.

Deltoid Function

The Deltoid muscle is the major abductor of the arm. It also assists in flexing and extending the arm.

Levator Scapulae Function

The Levator Scapulae muscle elevates the scapula. It helps move the shoulder blade upwards.

Rhomboid Minor and Major Function

Both the Rhomboid Minor and Major work together to elevate and retract the scapula, pulling it closer to the spine.

Dorsal Scapular Nerve

The Dorsal Scapular Nerve innervates several shoulder muscles, including the Rhomboid Major and Minor, providing motor control for scapular movement.

Study Notes

Trapezius

  • Origin: Superior nuchal line, external occipital protuberance, medial margin of the ligamentum nuchae, spinous processes of C7 to T12 and related supraspinous ligaments
  • Insertion: Superior edge of the spine of the scapula, acromion, posterior border of lateral one-third of clavicle
  • Innervation: Spinal part of accessory nerve (XI), C3 and C4 anterior rami (sensory/proprioception)
  • Function: Powerful scapula elevator, rotates scapula during humerus abduction (above horizontal), middle fibers retract scapula, lower fibers depress scapula

Deltoid

  • Origin: Inferior edge of spine of scapula, lateral margin of acromion, anterior border of lateral one-third of clavicle
  • Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus
  • Innervation: Axillary nerve (C5, C6)
  • Function: Major arm abductor (beyond initial 15° of supraspinatus), clavicular fibers assist in arm flexion, posterior fibers assist in arm extension

Levator Scapulae

  • Origin: Transverse processes of C1 and C2 vertebrae, posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C3 and C4 vertebrae
  • Innervation: Branches of C3, C4 anterior rami, and branches of the dorsal scapular nerve (C5)
  • Function: Elevates scapula

Rhomboid Minor

  • Origin: Lower end of ligamentum nuchae, spinous processes of C7 and T1 vertebrae
  • Innervation: Dorsal scapular nerve (C4, C5)
  • Function: Elevates and retracts scapula

Rhomboid Major

  • Origin: Spinous processes of T2-T5 vertebrae and intervening supraspinous ligaments
  • Insertion: Posterior surface of medial border of scapula (from superior angle to root of spine of scapula)
  • Innervation: Dorsal scapular nerve (C4, C5)
  • Function: Elevates and retracts scapula
