  • Lie in the subcutaneous fascia.
  • Function: Show facial expressions, emotions, speech, mastication.

    • Origin: Anterior nasal spine & midline above chin, superficial temporal arteries
    • Insertion: Fibres in upper & lower lip

    • Blood supply: Facial, maxillary & superficial temporal arteries
    • Action: Elevation/depression, protrusion/compression of lips
  • Levator Labii Superioris:
    • Origin: Lower rim of orbit
    • Insertion: Orbicularis oris fibres in upper lip
    • Nerve: Facial, zygomatic and buccal.
    • Blood supply: Facial & maxillary arteries
    • Action: Elevates upper lip
  • Depressor Labii Inferioris:
    • Origin: Lowest portion of oblique line of mandible

  • Mentalis:
    • Origin: Incisive fossa, anterior of mandible.

    • Action: Pulls skin of chin up; aids with clearing food from labial surface.
  • Buccinator:
    • Origin: Pterygoimandibular raphae and buccal alveolar bone

    • Action: Pulls corners of mouth back. Compresses cheek against molars buccally. Directs food to occlusal surface of molars.
