    Study Notes

    Muscle Tissues

    • Muscle tissue is one of the four types of tissue in the human body.
    • There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth.
    • All muscle tissue contracts to produce force.

    Skeletal Muscle

    • Skeletal muscle is responsible for movement of the skeleton and is under voluntary control.
    • Skeletal muscle cells are organized into bundles called fascicles.
    • Each fascicle is surrounded by a connective tissue sheath called the perimysium.
    • Skeletal muscle cells are surrounded by a thin layer of connective tissue called endomysium.
    • The entire muscle is surrounded by dense connective tissue called the epimysium.
    • The functional unit of a skeletal muscle is the sarcomere.
    • The sarcomere is defined by the Z-disk.
    • The sarcomere consists of two proteins, actin and myosin.
    • Actin is the thin filament, and myosin is the thick filament.

    Cardiac Muscle

    • Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart.
    • Cardiac muscle cells are striated and branched.
    • Cardiac muscle cells are connected by intercalated discs, which allow for rapid communication, allowing the heart to beat rhythmically.
    • Cardiac muscle is under involuntary control, meaning that you cannot control your heart rate.

    Smooth Muscle

    • Smooth muscle is found in the walls of hollow organs, such as the digestive tract, blood vessels, and uterus.
    • Smooth muscle cells are spindle-shaped and lack striations.
    • Smooth muscle is under involuntary control, meaning that you cannot control the contractions of smooth muscle.
    • Smooth muscle cells are connected by gap junctions, which allow for rapid communication and coordinated contractions.

    Comparing the Three Muscle Types

Muscle Type Striated? Voluntary? Location Function
Skeletal Yes Yes Attached to bones Movement of the skeleton
Cardiac Yes No Heart Pumping blood
Smooth No No Walls of hollow organs Regulates organ function
