Study Notes
Muscle Tissues
- Muscle tissue is one of the four types of tissue in the human body.
- There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth.
- All muscle tissue contracts to produce force.
Skeletal Muscle
- Skeletal muscle is responsible for movement of the skeleton and is under voluntary control.
- Skeletal muscle cells are organized into bundles called fascicles.
- Each fascicle is surrounded by a connective tissue sheath called the perimysium.
- Skeletal muscle cells are surrounded by a thin layer of connective tissue called endomysium.
- The entire muscle is surrounded by dense connective tissue called the epimysium.
- The functional unit of a skeletal muscle is the sarcomere.
- The sarcomere is defined by the Z-disk.
- The sarcomere consists of two proteins, actin and myosin.
- Actin is the thin filament, and myosin is the thick filament.
Cardiac Muscle
- Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart.
- Cardiac muscle cells are striated and branched.
- Cardiac muscle cells are connected by intercalated discs, which allow for rapid communication, allowing the heart to beat rhythmically.
- Cardiac muscle is under involuntary control, meaning that you cannot control your heart rate.
Smooth Muscle
- Smooth muscle is found in the walls of hollow organs, such as the digestive tract, blood vessels, and uterus.
- Smooth muscle cells are spindle-shaped and lack striations.
- Smooth muscle is under involuntary control, meaning that you cannot control the contractions of smooth muscle.
- Smooth muscle cells are connected by gap junctions, which allow for rapid communication and coordinated contractions.
Comparing the Three Muscle Types
Muscle Type | Striated? | Voluntary? | Location | Function |
---|---|---|---|---|
Skeletal | Yes | Yes | Attached to bones | Movement of the skeleton |
Cardiac | Yes | No | Heart | Pumping blood |
Smooth | No | No | Walls of hollow organs | Regulates organ function |
