Study Notes
Cutaneous Innervation
- Supraclavicular nerve (cervical plexus)
- Upper lateral cutaneous nerve of arm (axillary nerve)
- Medial cutaneous nerve of arm (brachial plexus)
- Posterior cutaneous nerve of arm (radial nerve)
Deep Fascia
- Deltoid fascia
Deltoid Muscle
- Origin: Lateral 1/3rd of clavicle
- Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity
- Action: Flexion and medial rotation of arm
- Nerve supply: Axillary nerve (C5, C6)
Deltoid Muscle (Middle/Acromial part)
- Chief abductor of arm
Deltoid Muscle (Post/Spinous part)
- Extension and lateral rotation of arm
- Nerve supply: Axillary nerve (C5, C6)
Supraspinatus Muscle
- Origin: Supraspinous fossa
- Insertion: Sup facet on greater tuberosity
- Action: Abducts humerus
- Nerve supply: Suprascapular nerve (C4, C5, C6)
Infraspinatus Muscle
- Origin: Infraspinous fossa
- Insertion: Middle facet on greater tubercle
- Action: Laterally rotates humerus
- Nerve supply: Suprascapular nerve (C5, C6)
Teres Minor Muscle
- Origin: Sup part of lateral border of scapula
- Insertion: Inferior facet on greater tubercle
- Action: Laterally rotates humerus
- Nerve supply: Axillary nerve (C5, C6)
Teres Major Muscle
- Origin: Dorsal surface of inferior angle of scapula
- Insertion: Medial lip of intertubercular groove
- Action: Adducts and medially rotates humerus
- Nerve supply: Lower subscapular nerve (C6, C7)
Subscapularis Muscle
- Origin: Subscapular fossa
- Insertion: Lesser tubercle of humerus
- Action: Medially rotates humerus
- Nerve supply: Upper and lower subscapular nerves (C5, C6, C7)
Muscles Inserting to Greater Tubercle:
- Supraspinatus (suprascapular nerve)
- Infraspinatus (suprascapular nerve)
- Teres minor (axillary nerve)
Rotator Cuff
- SITS (Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, Subscapularis Muscles)
- Rotator cuff muscles hold the head of humerus within the glenoid cavity.
