Study Notes
Human Factors and Aviation
- If something can go wrong, it will due to lack of knowledge, weariness from labor, nervous exhaustion, temporary loss of power and ability to respond.
- If something is bad, it is always bad due to complacency, stress, distraction, fatigue, and lack of experience or training for the task.
- If something is fun, it is bad due to lack of awareness, norms, and lack of communication.
Oral Communication
- Three mediums of oral communication are mouth (speak), ear (hear), and result (outcome).
- Alternately, speaking (transmitting), listening (receiving), and feedback (give and receive) are also mediums of oral communication.
Human Senses
- Five human senses are sense of taste, pain, hearing, touch, and vision.
- Other senses include sense of smell, love, sight, agony, and listening.
Resource Management
- Effective use of all resources, including human and other aviation system resources, is the definition of Crew Resource Management (CRM).
- CRM has a three-pronged approach to error management: avoid errors, mitigate errors, and eliminate errors.
Cognitive Science
- Cognitive Science is the study of how humans think, solve problems, and process information.
- This knowledge is critical to the design of equipment, software, and documentation.
Anthropometry
- Anthropometry is the study of factors such as size, strength, reach, and other dimensions that can be qualified to match humans as machines.
Errors and Maintenance
- Unintentional wandering or deviation from accuracy is an unintentional error.
- A 100-hour inspection required by the Federal Aviation Regulations on a powerplant or any component thereof must be performed by a certificated mechanic with an airframe and powerplant rating.
Certificates and Ratings
- A mechanic certificate with airframe and/or powerplant ratings is valid until surrendered, suspended, or revoked.
- A holder of a certificate issued under 14 CFR part 65 has to notify the FAA within 30 days after any change in permanent mailing address.
Human Error
- According to Dr. James Reason, there are two types of human failure: active and latent.
- Three types of human error are omission, commission, and extraneous.
Instrument Repairs and Maintenance
- Instrument repairs may be performed by the instrument manufacturer or by an FAA-approved instrument repair station.
- On airframe instruments, repairs may be performed by mechanics with an airframe rating.
SHEL Model
- The SHEL model is a human factors tool used to determine not only what the problem is but also where and why it exists.
Temporary Airman Certificate
- The maximum duration of a temporary airman certificate is 120 days.
Federal Aviation Regulations
- Part 65 of the Federal Aviation Regulations prescribes the requirements for issuing mechanic certificates and associated ratings and the general operating rules for the holders of these certificates and ratings.
Quality System Assurance
- A quality system is assured by an internal reporting and auditing system.
Positive Human Factors
- The positive aspects of human factor issues are referred to as the Magnificent Seven.
