Mud Weight and its Importance in Drilling

Mud weight is the weight of mud per unit volume and it is important in drilling because it controls formation pressure and helps wellbore stability.

Mud weight is measured and reported in pounds per gallon (PPG), pounds per cubic feet (lb/ft3), or grams per milliliter (g/ml).

The conventional mud balance may give inaccurate readings if there is air or gas inside the fluid phase.
