Stages of Childbirth

• Stage 1: Labor
  • Onset of contractions that cause the cervix to dilate and efface
  • Lasts until the cervix is fully dilated (usually 6-12 hours for first-time mothers)
  • Divided into early labor, active labor, and transition
• Stage 2: Pushing
  • Mother begins to push the baby out of the birth canal
  • Lasts around 1-2 hours for first-time mothers
  • Can be done with or without epidural anesthesia
• Stage 3: Delivery of the Placenta
  • After the baby is born, the mother delivers the placenta
  • Lasts around 5-30 minutes

Types of Childbirth

• Vaginal Birth
  • Most common type of childbirth
  • Baby is delivered through the birth canal
• Cesarean Section (C-Section)
  • Surgical delivery of the baby through the abdomen
  • May be necessary for complications or if the mother has had a previous C-section
• Assisted Vaginal Birth
  • Use of forceps or vacuum extraction to help deliver the baby
  • May be necessary for complications or if the mother is exhausted

  • Deep breathing, slow breathing, and controlled breathing to help manage pain
• Relaxation Techniques
  • Massage, hydrotherapy, and guided imagery to help reduce pain and anxiety

Complications and Interventions

• Fetal Distress
  • Signs of distress, such as abnormal heart rate, may require immediate intervention
• Prolonged Labor
  • Labor that lasts longer than expected may require interventions, such as oxytocin or C-section
• Postpartum Hemorrhage
  • Excessive bleeding after delivery may require medical attention
• Episiotomy
  • Incision made to widen the vaginal opening and prevent tears during delivery
