MPLS VPN Fundamentals
- MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) is a unique feature that controls the entire path of a packet without explicitly specifying the intermediate routers.
- It creates tunnels through intermediary routers that can span multiple segments, used for provisioning MPLS-based VPNs.
MPLS Applications
- Improves packet-forwarding performance in the network by using Layer-2 switching paradigms.
- Simplifies packet forwarding through routers, making it easy to implement.
- Increases network performance by enabling routing by switching at wireline speeds.
- Supports QoS (Quality of Service) and CoS (Class of Service) for service differentiation.
- Uses traffic-engineered path setup to achieve service-level guarantees.
Overlay VPN Model
- Initially implemented by SP (Service Provider) using Layer 1 (physical layer) connectivity or Layer 2 transport circuit between customer sites.
- Customer was responsible for all other layers, and the service provider was not aware of customer routing or routes.
Peer-to-Peer Model
- Developed to overcome the drawbacks of the Overlay model and provide customers with optimal data transport via the SP backbone.
- The service provider actively participates in customer routing, accommodating customers using overlapping address spaces.
- MPLS VPN is an implementation of the peer-to-peer model, exchanging Layer 3 customer routing information and forwarding data between customer sites using the MPLS-enabled SP IP backbone.
MPLS VPN Architecture
- Consists of customer network and provider network.
- Customer network includes devices or routers spanning multiple sites belonging to the customer.
- CE routers interface with the service provider network.
- Provider network consists of provider edge and provider core routers, controlling traffic routing between sites and customer traffic isolation.
