Study Notes

FINE-C Overview

  • FINE-C is an engine pre-start routine designed to ensure motorcycle readiness.
  • FINE-C stands for Fuel, Ignition, Neutral, Engine cut-off switch, Choke, and Clutch.

FINE-C Components

  • Fuel: Turn the fuel supply valve on, if equipped.
  • Ignition: Turn the ignition switch to the On position; indicator lights should illuminate.
  • Neutral: Ensure the transmission is in Neutral, indicated by a green light; the motorcycle should roll when the clutch and front brake are released.
  • Engine Cut-Off Switch: Set the switch to the Run/On position.
  • Choke and Clutch: Set the choke for cold starts and squeeze the clutch lever, which must be in to start the engine.

Safety Procedures

  • Always apply at least one brake when starting the engine.
  • Avoid using the throttle when the choke is on to prevent excessive fuel delivery.
  • Release the clutch lever slowly to confirm the motorcycle is in Neutral after starting.
  • Never remove your hand from the clutch while starting, as the motorcycle may be in gear.

Control Locations

  • The throttle is on the right hand grip; rolling on the throttle means twisting it towards you.
  • The clutch lever is located at the left hand grip.
  • The gearshift is positioned on the left footrest, shifting up for a higher gear and down for a lower gear.
  • Most motorcycles typically have 5 or 6 gears, with Neutral located between first and second gear.

Fuel Systems and Controls

  • The fuel supply valve is situated under the engine, controlling the amount of fuel to the tank.
  • The ignition switch, found near the instrument cluster, typically includes On, Off, Lock, and sometimes Park positions.
  • The Park position activates the taillight for visibility when stationary.
  • The choke control is located on the handlebars or near the engine, providing an enriched fuel mixture for cold starts.

Engine Cut-Off and Other Controls

  • The engine cut-off switch is found near the right hand grip and allows for engine shutdown without removing hands from the handlebar.
  • Various buttons, including the Turn Signal, High-Low Beam, Horn, and Engine Start, are typically located near the left or right handgrip for easy thumb operation.

Additional Notes

  • Fuel-injected motorcycles do not feature a choke control, as they automatically adjust fuel delivery.
  • The choke should be turned off once the engine idles smoothly without assistance.
