Mongol Expansion
- Mongols, a nomadic group from north of China, conquered all of China in the 1200s.
- They lived in yurts, herded horses, sheep, and yaks, and were organized into clans.
- The Mongols lived on vast steppes and developed skills like horsemanship and warfare.
- Genghis Khan (GK) unified Mongol clans, established a legal code, and formed a skilled army.
- GK's army, made up of trained warriors, conquered other groups, bringing tribute and new recruits.
- Mongol forces invaded China in 1211.
- They used brutality; cities were looted and burned, leading to many surrenders.
- After GK's death, the empire was divided into khanates (regions).
- Golden Horde: In Europe
- Il-Khanate: In the Middle East
- Conquered Persia, Baghdad, and parts of Syria/Palestine. Their advance was halted by the Mamluks.
- Kublai Khan: focused on China's conquest.
- The Mongol Empire was the largest land empire in history, stretching from Europe to the Pacific and Siberia to Himalayas.
- This brought stability, encouraged trade, and increased contact between Asia and Europe.
- Mongols also respected other cultures.
