Questions and Answers

What are the key differences between Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS)?

SAN is a dedicated network that provides access to consolidated block level storage, while NAS is a file-level storage system that connects to a network and allows file sharing.

Explain the differences between DVD-R and DVD+R formats.

DVD-R is a write-once format primarily used for data storage and video recording, whereas DVD+R allows for better error management and supports more advanced recording features.

What is a RAID configuration and why is it important for data storage?

RAID configurations combine multiple disk drives into a single unit for redundancy and performance, ensuring data integrity and protection against drive failures.

How does RFID technology work to store and transmit information?

<p>RFID technology uses an antenna and a memory chip to store information, which is transmitted via radio waves when an RFID reader interacts with the RFID tag.</p> Signup and view all the answers

Discuss the advantages of using RFID tags over traditional barcodes in inventory management.

<p>RFID tags can be read without direct line-of-sight and in bulk, allowing for faster inventory checks and reducing human error compared to traditional barcodes.</p> Signup and view all the answers

What is the primary purpose of a Storage Area Network (SAN)?

<p>To provide centralized storage for other attached servers.</p> Signup and view all the answers

How does Network Attached Storage (NAS) differ from traditional file servers?

<p>NAS is dedicated solely to providing storage over a network, while traditional file servers handle multiple tasks alongside storage.</p> Signup and view all the answers

What is a key difference between CD-R and CD-RW optical discs?

<p>CD-R can be written to only once, while CD-RW can be erased and rewritten multiple times.</p> Signup and view all the answers

Study Notes

Module 8: Digital Storage

  • Digital storage is the physical material a computer uses to retain data, programs, and applications.
  • Cloud storage keeps information on internet servers, these servers conceal the physical media holding files from the user.
  • Storage devices record and retrieve data from physical storage media.
  • Reading and writing are processes of transferring data between a medium and memory.
  • Memory capacity is measured in bytes, with terms like kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB) etc (See table 8-1 for details).
  • A storage device is hardware for recording and retrieving from media.
  • Volatility refers to if data is erased when power is off; RAM is volatile, storage is nonvolatile.
  • Hard drives contain platters for magnetic storage.
  • Formatting divides hard disks into tracks and sectors.
  • Hard disks vary in capacity based on platters, magnetic coatings, recording type, and density.
  • Characteristics of hard drives include: tracks, sectors, platters, form factor, read/write heads, and revolutions per minute
  • Hard disks have read/write heads that read and write info, a motor spins the platters for movement of heads over data.
  • Head crashes happen when read/write heads touch the platter surface; backups are crucial.
  • An SSD (solid state drive) has its own processor for managing storage.
  • SSDs are faster, quieter, more durable and lighter than traditional hard disks.
  • SSDs use less power, generate less heat, and have longer lifespans than hard disks, and don't require defragmentation.
  • External hard drives are separate storage devices connected to devices via USB.
  • RAID is a group of integrated hard drives for redundancy and efficiency.
  • Memory cards (SDHC, SDXC, miniSD, microSDHC) are removable flash storage for devices. Other types include microSDXC, CF, XD Picture Card, Memory Stick PRO Duo, and M2.
  • USB flash drives plug into USB ports for data transfer.
  • Cloud storage is an internet service storing data for computer users.
  • Optical discs (like CDs and DVDs) are flat portable discs written to and read by lasers.
  • Optical discs have spirals of data tracks and are divided into sectors.
  • CD-ROMs can be read, not written to; CD-Rs are one time write; CD-RWs are erasable.
  • DVD-ROM, DVD-R/DVD+R are WORM (write-once, read-many) formats, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD+RAM allow multiple writes/erasures.
  • Enterprise hardware is used for heavy data use and maximum efficiency and availability, and may use RAID for duplicates to improve reliability.
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a network server dedicated to storage and providing storage to clients on the network.
  • Storage Area Network (SAN) is a high-speed network delivering storage to other servers.
  • Tapes are magnetically coated ribbons used for high-capacity storage.
