- It is the lingua franca of the Hindi Belt region, which encompasses parts of northern, central, eastern, and western India.
- Hindi is based on the Khariboli dialect of Delhi and neighboring areas, and is written in the Devanagari script.
- Hindi is one of the two official languages of the Government of India, along with English. It is also an official language in nine states, three union territories, and three additional states in India.
- Hindi is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Republic of India.
- Hindi is the standardized and Sanskritised register of the Hindustani language.
- There are other languages called "Hindi" outside India, but they do not refer to the Standard Hindi described here. These include Fiji Hindi and Caribbean Hindustani.
- Fiji Hindi has an official status in Fiji, and Caribbean Hindustani is spoken in Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.
