Study Notes
- Mitosis is a process of cell division that enables regeneration of body parts
- Mitosis involves the separation of nuclear chromosomes into two identical daughter nuclei
- Mitosis is composed of four main phases: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
- During prophase, chromatin condenses, forming chromosomes, and the nucleolus disappears
- Centrosomes, each with a pair of centrioles, move apart forming a spindle between them
- In metaphase, the chromosomes align along the middle of the cell due to microtubules interaction
- During anaphase, sister chromatids separate at the kinetochore and move towards opposite poles as microtubules shorten
- Telophase involves the arrival of daughter chromosomes at the poles, the chromatin starts to decondense, and nucleoli and nuclear membranes reform.
- An additional phase, cytokinesis, occurs after nuclear division, creating two separate cells with their own nuclei and cytoplasm.
- Cytokinesis is different in animals and plants: in animals, a cleavage furrow forms and deepens, dividing the cytoplasm, while in plants a cell plate forms and grows, dividing the cell wall.
