Flashcards
Interphase
Interphase
The longest phase of the cell cycle where the cell grows, duplicates its DNA, and prepares for division.
G1 Phase
G1 Phase
The first stage of Interphase, where the cell grows and performs its normal functions. This is where proteins needed for DNA replication are made.
S Phase
S Phase
The 'Synthesis' phase, where the cell replicates its DNA, ensuring each daughter cell receives a complete copy.
G2 Phase
G2 Phase

Study Notes
Mitosis & Meiosis
- Cell division is a crucial process in the life cycle of cells, responsible for growth, development, and reproduction.
- There are two primary types of cell division:
- Mitosis
- Meiosis
Cell Cycle and Mitosis
- The cell cycle is the series of events that occur in a cell leading to its division and duplication.
- It consists of stages that prepare the cell for mitosis and ensure that the genetic material is correctly replicated and divided into two daughter cells.
Phases of the Cell Cycle
1. Interphase (non-dividing phase):
- This is the longest phase (90%) of the cell cycle, during which the cell grows, replicates its DNA, and prepares for division.
- Interphase itself is further divided into three subphases:
- a) G1 phase (Gap 1)
- b) S phase (Synthesis)
- c) G2 phase (Gap 2)
G1 phase (Gap 1)
- The cell grows and carries out normal metabolic functions.
- Proteins needed for DNA synthesis are produced, and organelles are duplicated.
- The cell checks for favourable conditions (nutrients, space, growth factors) to proceed to the next phase.
S phase (Synthesis)
- DNA replication occurs at the centromere.
- Each chromosome is duplicated, resulting in two sister chromatids joined at the centromere.
- The genetic material is doubled in preparation for cell division.
G2 phase (Gap 2)
- The cell continues to grow, and additional proteins are synthesized for mitosis.
- The cell checks for errors in the duplicated DNA and makes repairs if necessary.
- The cell also ensures that all organelles are ready for the upcoming division.
