- Disadvantages of auger mining include leaving about 65% of the coal reserve in place, creating drainage holes for acid-laden water, and facing surface subsidence and spontaneous combustion in the auger holes
- Highwall mining is similar to auger mining, but uses different equipment and shares common elements with a continuous mining machine
- The highwall miner can advance more than 360m under the highwall and recover around 50% of the coal under the highwall
