Study Notes
The Mindanao-Sulu Crises
- Moro land experienced significant crises in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
- Three key events exacerbated the situation: the Jabidah Massacre (Corregidor Incident) on March 17, 1968, the November 1971 elections, and the declaration of martial law on September 21, 1972.
Jabidah Massacre
- At least 28 Muslim recruits were killed in Corregidor.
- The killings were carried out by Philippine Army personnel.
- Allegedly, these recruits were involved in secret preparations for operations in Sabah.
November 1971 Elections
- Elections shifted political power from Muslims to Christians in parts of Moroland.
- These elections fueled violence between rival Christian and Muslim groups.
- The shift of power in Cotabato region led to a Christian winning against an incumbent Muslim governor. Other Christian mayors were elected.
Proclamation of Martial Law
- Martial Law was declared by President Ferdinand Marcos.
- One reason for declaring Martial Law was the conflict between Muslims and Christians in Mindanao and Sulu.
Inhuman Treatment of Moros
- The MIM (Muslim/Mindanao Independence Movement) was formed in 1968, aiming for an Islamic Republic of Mindanao and Sulu, and triggered by the Corregidor Incident. -The BMLO (Bangsa Moro Liberation Organization) was founded as an umbrella organization under which other liberation forces operated.
- The MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front) was founded by secular-minded professionals and students.
Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)
- The group was formed.
- Its leadership was headed by Nur Misuari, became manipulated and secretive.
- The MILF became the official ideology of the group.
- One of the founders of the MNLF and the chairman of the MILF was Dr. Ustadz Salamat Hashim.
