Miller Classification
-
Class I:
- Marginal tissue recession present
- No periodontal loss in the interdental area
- Achievable 100% root coverage
-
Class II:
- Marginal tissue recession extends to or beyond the mucogingival junction (MGJ)
- No periodontal loss in the interdental area
- Achievable 100% root coverage
-
Class III:
- Marginal tissue recession extends to or beyond the MGJ
- Bone or tissue loss in the interdental area
- Malpositioned teeth may prevent achieving 100% root coverage
-
Class IV:
- Marginal tissue recession extends to or beyond the MGJ
- Bone or tissue loss present in the interdental area
- Severe malpositioning of teeth makes root coverage unlikely
Recession Types
-
Recession Type 1 (RT1):
- Recession occurs without interproximal attachment loss
- Often results from toothbrush abrasion
-
Recession Type 2 (RT2):
- Interproximal attachment loss is less than or equal to buccal attachment loss
- Primarily induced by periodontitis, resulting in horizontal bone loss
-
Recession Type 3 (RT3):
- Interproximal attachment loss exceeds buccal attachment loss
- Associated with interproximal infrabony defects
