- Provides tools and capabilities to retain needed content and delete unneeded content
- Retaining and deleting content is often needed for compliance and regulatory requirements
- Deleting content also reduces attack surface
- Retention policies and labels are important tools for data lifecycle management
- They help organizations govern information by ensuring the retention of content for a required time (and permanent deletion afterwards)
- Content is kept for a specified time, then permanently deleted
- Retention policies/labels help manage compliance proactively
Retention Policies
- Used to assign the same retention settings to content at a site or mailbox level
- Content inherits retention settings from its container
- Settings do not travel with the content to a new location
Retention Labels
- Used to assign retention settings at an item level
- Content keeps its label if moved within the tenant; no label if moved outside the tenant
- Can be applied manually or automatically based on conditions
- Supports disposition review of content before permanent deletion
