Michigan: A State Overview
- Location and Geography: Located in the Great Lakes region of the Upper Midwest, Michigan shares borders with Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Ontario (Canada). It has two peninsulas, the Upper and Lower, separated by the Straits of Mackinac and connected by the Mackinac Bridge. It's also the largest in total area east of the Mississippi River.
Early History and Indigenous Peoples
- Indigenous Inhabitants: For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples, including Ojibwe, Odawa, Potawatomi, and Wyandot, inhabited the region. The Algonquian peoples, including the Anishinaabe groups, comprised the largest populations at the time of European arrival.
- French Claims and Settlement: French explorers claimed the region for New France, and French settlers, including missionaries (especially Jesuit), established forts and settlements. The name "Michigan" comes from the Ojibwe word for "large water" or "large lake."

The Michigan Territory was established in 1805 eventually achieving statehood in 1837 as a free state.
