Study Notes
Blind Spots
- Blind spots are areas around vehicles that are not visible in mirrors.
- Typically located to the left rear and right rear of the vehicle.
Basic Speed Law
- Requires driving at a "careful and prudent" speed in all conditions.
- Must be able to stop within clear distance ahead.
Speed Limits
- 15 mph: In mobile home parks and certain municipal parks.
- 25 mph: In platted subdivisions, condominium complexes, and watch for varying speed limits in business districts, parks, and school zones.
- 45 mph: In work zones if posted; otherwise, normal speed limit applies.
- 55 mph: On non-freeway streets and highways unless otherwise posted.
- 70 mph max / 55 mph min: On freeways; school buses and trucks are restricted to 60 mph.
Safe Following Distance
- Maintain a three- to four-second following distance from the vehicle ahead.
Road Scanning
- Look down the road ahead for 12 seconds to anticipate traffic and hazards.
Turn Signaling
- Right turn: Left arm bent up.
- Left turn: Left arm straight out.
- Slow down/stop: Left arm bent down.
Intersections
- Check for oncoming traffic, signals, signs, and road conditions as you approach.
- Hidden vehicles can be obscured by larger vehicles in multi-lane scenarios.
Right-of-Way Rules
- Yield when turning at intersections, giving way to pedestrians and vehicles in the intersection.
- At unsignaled intersections, yield to the driver on the right if you arrive simultaneously and to vehicles reaching the intersection first.
- At T-intersections without signals, yield to vehicles on the through road.
Traffic Signals
- When turning left at a traffic signal, yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic.
Stop or Yield Signs
- Yield to vehicles and pedestrians in the intersection and to cross traffic that doesn’t have to stop.
- When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
Additional Yielding Situations
- Yield to uniformed law enforcement officers, flag persons at construction sites, vehicles in funeral processions, and emergency vehicles.
- Be especially cautious around stopped waste collection, utility, or maintenance vehicles with flashing lights.
Turning on Red
- Right turn on red is allowed unless "no turn on red" is posted; complete stop required and yield to pedestrians and traffic.
- Left turn on red is permitted only from a one-way street onto another one-way street, after stopping and yielding.
