- Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was launched in 2005.
- It provides a legal guarantee for 100 days of employment per financial year to adult members of rural households.
- Employment is specifically for unskilled manual work at statutory minimum wage.
Employment Conditions
- Around one-third of the workforce must consist of women.
- Employment opportunities are provided within a 5 km radius; extra wages apply for distances beyond this.
- Wage employment must be granted within 15 days of application or demand for work.

- The Ministry of Rural Development has announced increased wage rates for FY 2024-2025, effective from April 1, 2024.

- Andhra Pradesh: Rs. 300.00
- Arunachal Pradesh: Rs. 234.00
- Assam: Rs. 249.00
- Bihar: Rs. 245.00
- Goa: Rs. 356.00
- Haryana: Rs. 374.00 (highest wage rate)
- Uttar Pradesh: Rs. 237.00
- Uttarakhand: Rs. 237.00
- Himachal Pradesh has different rates for scheduled (Rs. 295.00) and non-scheduled areas (Rs. 236.00).
- Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland maintain the lowest wage rates at Rs. 234 per day.
