    Exoplanet Discovery Methods

Exoplanets, which are planets orbiting stars other than our Sun, have been discovered using several different techniques. One such method involves monitoring the transit of light from a star when a planet passes between it and Earth, causing a dip in brightness called a transit. Another technique is Doppler spectroscopy, where measurements of the motions of nearby stars can reveal whether they have orbiting planets. These methods typically require precise observations over many years by large observatories like Keck Observatory or Hubble Space Telescope. Additionally, indirect evidence can be gathered through methods like gravitational microlensing and astrometry, which measure changes in position caused by planets passing by stars.

    Types of Exoplanets

There are four basic categories of exoplanets distinguished by their composition and characteristics: gas giants, hot Jupiters, terrestrial rocky worlds, and mini-Neptunes. Gas giants resemble Saturn or Uranus while hot Jupiters orbit very close to their suns, making them much warmer than Earth's average temperature. Terrestrial rocky worlds could theoretically support life due to conditions similar to our own planet Earth. Mini-Neptunes fall somewhere between these extremes with small size and possibly cooler temperatures than those found on Earth.

In recent years, multiple discoveries have expanded upon this classification scheme. For example, Kepler-78b was discovered to contain both ocean water and silicate rocks, suggesting potential habitability despite being slightly larger than Venus. In addition, some researchers have begun studying exomoons - moons around exoplanets - indicating another layer of complexity within this field. Overall, the exploration of exoplanets continues to offer new insights into what makes up our universe and how planets might form elsewhere.
