    Flashcards

    Menstrual Phase

This phase lasts approximately 5 days. Blood loss occurs (50-60 cc) and consists of blood and endometrial tissue fragments. Blood does not clot. Endometrial thickness is about 0.5 mm. The basal layer of the endometrium contains the bases of uterine glands.

    Regenerative Phase

This phase lasts 3-4 days during which epithelial cells from the uterine glands spread to cover the endometrial surface via a flat cell layer.

    Proliferative (Follicular) Phase

This phase lasts 5-6 days. The endometrium thickens to approximately 4 mm, cells become cuboidal, uterine glands become longer and straighter. It is influenced by estrogen secreted by the developing ovarian follicle.

    Secretory (Luteal) Phase

This phase lasts 10-14 days. The endometrium thickens further to 5-7 mm and forms three layers: a compact layer, a spongy layer, and a deep basal layer. The cells in the uterine glands become columnar and filled with secretions. The spiral arteries supplying the compact and spongy layers dilate and become convoluted, making the endometrium soft and edematous. This phase is dependent on progesterone secreted by the corpus luteum.
