Meiose
- Prophase 1: Homologous chromosomes (same size, shape, and carrying the same genes) pair up. Crossing over (exchange of genetic material) can occur. Nuclear envelope breaks down.
- Metaphase 1: Paired homologous chromosomes align along the metaphase plate.
- Anaphase 1: Homologous chromosomes separate and move to opposite poles of the cell.
- Telophase 1: Chromosomes arrive at the poles, and the cells divide (cytokinesis). Two haploid (containing one set of chromosomes) daughter cells form.
- Prophase 2: Chromosomes condense again in each of the two haploid cells. New spindle fibers form.
- Metaphase 2: Chromosomes align individually along the metaphase plate in each cell.
- Anaphase 2: Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles in each cell.
- Telophase 2: Chromosomes arrive at the poles, and the cells divide (cytokinesis), resulting in four haploid daughter cells.
