Study Notes
- Ms. Luck, in her 40s with Long Covid, requires assistance with medication administration and has recently developed Conjunctivitis.
Ms. Luck's 0800 Medications:
- Salbutamol (Ventolin) MDI 2 puffs
- Budesonide (Pulmicort) MDI 2 puffs
- Polysporin (antibiotic) eye drops 1 drop to Right Eye.
- Document all medications on the MAR immediately following administration.
Special Considerations for Medication Administration:
- Give medication with water only
- Use an Aero Chamber/Spacer for MDI administration
- Provide oral care after MDI administration
Eye Drop Administration:
- Apply gentle pressure to the inner corner of the eye for 30-60 seconds after administering eye drops to prevent drainage into the nasal passage.
- Administer eye drops into the lower eyelid while the patient looks up.
- For eye ointment, apply a thin amount along the inside of the lower eyelid from inner to outer corner, and ask the patient to blink slowly to spread it evenly.
MDI Administration:
- Wait 30-60 seconds between puffs of the same MDI medication to allow for better absorption of the first dose.
- Wait at least 2-5 minutes between different MDI medications to allow the first medication to take effect.
- Aero Chamber/Spacer delivers medication to the lungs properly.
- An Aero Chamber/Spacer should not squeal or whistle; this indicates the breathing is too fast, and slow, deep breathing promotes better medication absorption into the lungs.
Post-MDI Instructions:
- Rinse mouth after using an MDI to reduce oral thrush, dryness, irritation, and to wash away any stuck medication.
Lozenges as Medication:
- Lozenges are medication only if they contain medicinal ingredients like pain killers, while candy lozenges without such ingredients are not medication.
Assisting vs. Administering Medications:
- Assisting with medications means helping a client take their own medication.
- Administering medications means directly giving medication to a client who cannot take it themselves.
