Study Notes
Hypertension and Hypotension
- Hypertension: High blood pressure; over 140 mmHg systolic pressure and/or above 90 mmHg diastolic pressure for at least 2 readings, 30 days apart.
- Hypotension: Low blood pressure; systolic pressure below 100 mmHg or diastolic pressure below 60 mmHg.
- Normotension: Normal blood pressure; average blood pressure (BP) is 120/80 mmHg (in adults).
Assessing the Body
- Inspection: Assessing the body by using sight.
- Palpation: Examining the body by using touch.
- Percussion: Tapping body parts to produce sounds.
- Auscultation: Listening to body sounds using a stethoscope.
Body Positions
- Dorsal/Supine: Lying on the back.
- Fowler's: Lying on the back with the head of the bed elevated at various angles.
- Lithotomy: Lying on the back with legs supported in stirrups at a 90-degree angle.
- Genupectoral/Knee-Chest: Kneeling position with the torso at a 90-degree angle to the hips.
- Lateral: Lying on the side.
- Sim's: Semi-prone, side-lying position.
- Prone: Lying on the abdomen with the face turned to the side (also called face-lying position).
Nutritional Status
- Overweight: Body weight 10% greater than ideal body weight (IBW).
- Obesity: Body weight 20% greater than IBW.
- Dehydration: Fluid loss; insufficient fluids.
Feeding Methods
- Gastric gavage/Nasogastric tube feeding (NGT): Feeding a client through a tube inserted into the stomach via the nose.
- Gastric lavage: Irrigation of the stomach through a nasogastric tube
- Gastrostomy feeding: Feeding a client through a tube directly into the stomach through an abdominal incision.
- Jejunostomy feeding: Feeding a client through a tube inserted into the jejunum through an abdominal incision.
Bowel Function
- Defecation: Expulsion of feces from the rectum (also called bowel movement).
- Constipation: Passage of small, hard, dry stool or no stool passage over a period of time.
- Diarrhea: Frequent passage of watery stools.
- Fecal impaction: Collection of hardened, putty-like feces in the folds of the rectum.
