Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes
- A medical term is usually derived from a source language (Greek or Latin).
- Prefixes are added to the beginning of a medical term to modify its meaning
- Suffixes are added to the end of a medical term to modify its meaning.
- This can include giving additional info about the location of an organ or parts/time of the process.
- A root word is the main part of the word
- All medical words have at least one root
- A combining vowel is used to connect two roots together, even if the second root starts with a vowel.
- Combining vowels are usually "o."
- Certain combined forms are hard to pronounce due to a consonant at the end of the first part and a consonant as a root.
- Vowel "A", "E", "I", "O", and "U" are the vowels used
- The most common combining vowel is "o"
- This enables linking two word elements together.
