Study Notes
What is Data Visualization?
- Data visualization is the process of converting raw data into easily understood pictures of information that enable fast and effective decisions.
- It involves converting raw data to a form that is viewable and understandable to humans.
Types of Data Visualization
- Scientific visualization: concerned with data that has a well-defined representation in 2D or 3D space (e.g., from simulation mesh or scanner).
- Information visualization: concerned with data that does not have a well-defined representation in 2D or 3D space (i.e., “abstract data”).
Importance of Data Visualization
- Data visualization is used in software applications to provide an intuitive graphical interface.
- It is applied to many areas, including military, private business sectors, and scientific research, to enable users to glean useful information from their data for faster, more informed decision-making.
Why Visualize Data?
- Making data engaging and easily digestible.
- Identifying relationships, trends, and outliers within a set of data.
- Telling a story found within the data.
- Reinforcing an argument or opinion.
- Highlighting the important parts of a set of data.
How to Visualize Data?
- Two key factors to consider: pre-attentive attributes and types of data.
- Pre-attentive attributes are information we can process visually almost immediately, before sending the information to the attention processing parts of our brain.
- Examples of pre-attentive attributes include length, width, orientation, size, shape, enclosure, 2D position, grouping, color (hue), and color (intensity).
Color in Data Visualizations
- Three fundamental use cases for color in data visualizations:
- Distinguish groups of data from each other.
- Represent data values.
- Highlight.
Benefits of Data Visualization
- Allows users to see several different perspectives of the data.
- Makes it possible to interpret vast amounts of data.
- Offers the ability to note exceptions in the data.
- Allows the user to analyze visual patterns in the data.
- Helps translate data patterns into insights, making it a highly effective decision-making tool.
- Equips users with the ability to see influences that would otherwise be difficult to find.
- Simplifies the presentation, reducing the time and difficulty it takes to move from data to decision making.
