Study Notes
Medical Emergency Procedures
- Check the scene, then check the passenger
- Call the captain to contact Stat MD and page for medical assistance, and bring the AED
- Care for the passenger: A (airway), B (breathing), C (circulation/signs of life)
CPR and AED
- Perform 30 compressions and 2 breaths
- Make sure the AED is on
- Always use high flow
- Heart attack: contact Stat MD, provide oxygen, and use AED
- Cardiac emergency: contact Stat MD and provide oxygen
Burns
- 3rd degree burn: full thickness burn, burn to the bone, skin and soft tissue are black and burnt
- Cool water for 1st or 2nd degree burns
- Treat 2nd degree burns like 1st degree burns, but don't pop blisters
- Skin may appear black and brown
Bleeding
- Use direct pressure to stop bleeding
- Add more gauge and pressure if bleeding continues
- Focus on action
Unconscious Choking
- Signs of hypoxia: euphoria, dizziness, happy, disoriented, turning blue
- Perform CPR if unconscious choking
- Use 5 back blows for full airway obstruction, repeat until the object comes out or the person passes out
Medical Situations
- Check the scene, check the passenger, call the captain, and provide care
- Use the 30:2 ratio for CPR, regardless of the person
- Rescue breathing: breathe for the person
- Rescue breath: 2 rescue breaths
- AED: use on unconscious people not breathing, no detectable signs of life
AED and FRX
- FRX: extremely new, comes with pads and child/infant key
- FR2: old, comes with 2 sets of adult pads and 1 set of child/infant pads
- Both AEDs work the same
- Turn on the AED, then follow the instructions
Incident Report
- Report any incident that's out of the ordinary
- If you break a FAR, you must do an ASAP report
General
- Put on gloves first in any medical situation
- Don't check pulse with an adult, only with a child
- Don't listen to doctors or anyone else, only the captain and Stat MD
Emergency Procedures
- First action in an emergency: put on gloves
- Check the scene and passenger's health status
- Call the captain to contact Stat MD and page for medical assistance
- Bring the AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
ABCs of Emergency Care
- A: Airway (head tilt, chin left)
- B: Breathing (listen for 10 seconds)
- C: Circulation/Signs of Life
Cardiac Emergency
- Heart attack: contact Stat MD and provide oxygen
- AED: turn it on, follow prompts, and attach pads
Choking
- Unconscious choking: use back blows and abdominal thrusts
- Partial obstruction: encourage the person to cough
- Infant choking: use back blows and repeat until object is dislodged or infant becomes unresponsive
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
- 30 compressions: 2 breaths (for anyone)
- Use direct pressure to control bleeding
- For adults, use 30:2 ratio; for children, use 30:2 ratio with child-sized pads
AED Usage
- AED turns on automatically when opened
- Follow prompts and attach pads
- For children, use child-sized pads and key
- Do not use AED on someone with a pacemaker
Fr2 and Frx AED Models
- Fr2: older model, comes with 2 sets of adult pads and 1 set of child/infant pads
- Frx: newer model, comes with 2 sets of adult pads, 1 set of child/infant pads, and a key
- Both models have the same usage and turn on automatically when opened
Important Reminders
- Always check the scene and passenger's health status before calling for medical assistance
- Gloves are essential in all medical situations, except for safety demonstrations
- Do not store medication or listen to medical advice from anyone except the captain or Stat MD
- Know the differences between rescue breathing and rescue breaths
