Median Nerve Pathway in the Hand
- The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel.
- The carpal tunnel is located deep to the flexor retinaculum.
- The tunnel is bordered by the scaphoid and trapezoid bones laterally and the pisiform and hamate bones medially.
- The median nerve travels alongside nine flexor tendons (FDS, FDP, FPL).
- Distal to the tunnel, the median nerve innervates two and a half thenar muscles and the first two lumbrical muscles.
- Sensory fibers from the median nerve supply the palm, sides of the first three fingers, half of the fourth finger, and distal portions of the corresponding dorsal surfaces.
- The palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve, which supplies the central palm, originates proximal to the flexor retinaculum and travels superficially to it; therefore, it does not pass through the carpal tunnel.
