Flashcards

Median nerve path

The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel, then supplies muscles and skin in the hand.

Carpal tunnel location

The carpal tunnel is a passage under the flexor retinaculum, between specific wrist bones.

Median nerve branches

The median nerve in the hand branches to muscles and sensory areas of the hand.

Sensory function

The median nerve provides feeling to parts of the palm and fingers.

Palmar cutaneous branch

A branch of the median nerve that supplies feeling to the palm, but not through the carpal tunnel.

Study Notes

Median Nerve Pathway in the Hand

  • The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel.
  • The carpal tunnel is located deep to the flexor retinaculum.
  • The tunnel is bordered by the scaphoid and trapezoid bones laterally and the pisiform and hamate bones medially.
  • The median nerve travels alongside nine flexor tendons (FDS, FDP, FPL).
  • Distal to the tunnel, the median nerve innervates two and a half thenar muscles and the first two lumbrical muscles.
  • Sensory fibers from the median nerve supply the palm, sides of the first three fingers, half of the fourth finger, and distal portions of the corresponding dorsal surfaces.
  • The palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve, which supplies the central palm, originates proximal to the flexor retinaculum and travels superficially to it; therefore, it does not pass through the carpal tunnel.
