Measles (Rubeola, Morbilli, Nine-Day Measles)
- Caused by a Paramyxovirus, an RNA virus
- Incubation period: 7-14 days
- Prodromal symptoms: fever, Coryza, hacking cough, conjunctivitis
- Koplik's spots appear 2-4 days after prodromal symptoms
- Rash characteristics:
- Retroauricular and temporal region initially
- Spreads to the face
- Maculo-papulous exanthemes
- Associated symptoms:
- Photophobia
- High fever
- Complications:
- Bacterial superinfections
- Encephalitis
- Cerebellitis
- Subacute sclerotizing panencephalitis
Koplik's Spots
- Appear on the buccal mucosa opposite the 1st and 2nd upper molars
- Resemble tiny grains of white sand surrounded by inflammatory areolae
