- Caused by a Paramyxovirus, an RNA virus

- Koplik's spots appear 2-4 days after prodromal symptoms
- Rash characteristics:
- Retroauricular and temporal region initially
- Spreads to the face
- Maculo-papulous exanthemes
- Associated symptoms:
- Photophobia
- High fever
- Complications:
- Bacterial superinfections
- Encephalitis
- Cerebellitis
- Subacute sclerotizing panencephalitis
