Measles (Rubeola, Morbilli, Nine-Day Measles)

  • Caused by a Paramyxovirus, an RNA virus
  • Incubation period: 7-14 days
  • Prodromal symptoms: fever, Coryza, hacking cough, conjunctivitis
  • Koplik's spots appear 2-4 days after prodromal symptoms
  • Rash characteristics:
    • Retroauricular and temporal region initially
    • Spreads to the face
    • Maculo-papulous exanthemes
  • Associated symptoms:
    • Photophobia
    • High fever
  • Complications:
    • Bacterial superinfections
    • Encephalitis
    • Cerebellitis
    • Subacute sclerotizing panencephalitis

Koplik's Spots

  • Appear on the buccal mucosa opposite the 1st and 2nd upper molars
  • Resemble tiny grains of white sand surrounded by inflammatory areolae
