MAYDAY Procedures
Initial Status Report
- The Initial Status Report includes:
- Location (or last known location)

- Resources needed for rescue (including general status and air supply)
Action Steps for Firefighters
- If conscious and oriented, verbally guide the RIT team to the location
- If unable to use verbal commands, manually activate the Personal Alarm (PAL) to the ON mode
- Attempt self-rescue and communicate the plan of action
- Stay with the crew if still in contact
- Seek an area of safety
- Stay low and use the flashlight as a beacon for rescuers
- Make tapping sounds with tools periodically to guide rescuers
- Stay calm and conserve air

Incident Commander Responsibilities
- Respond to the "MAYDAY" initiator and get an Initial Status Report
- Communicate the "MAYDAY" initiation to the RIT team and ensure they are on the same channel
- Announce the RIT operation to all units on scene and limit radio use to emergency and necessary traffic
- Deploy the RIT team to initiate search and rescue efforts
- Establish the RIT Branch and assign a RIT Safety Officer
- Notify dispatch of the RIT operation and have them strike another alarm
- Assign all other incident radio traffic to Emergency Channel #1
- Continually evaluate the degree of risk and terminate the rescue efforts when necessary
RIT Branch Responsibilities
- Remain on the same channel as the firefighter in need of help
- Gather information about the firefighter in need and confirm with the RIT Branch Director
- Establish back-up RIT teams and other groups as needed
- Assign a RIT Group Supervisor to coordinate the RIT operation
- Ensure a minimum of 3 RIT teams are available
- Monitor work cycles and establish a time for work cycles
Additional Procedures
- If a second "MAYDAY" occurs on the same zone, assign it to Emergency Channel #2
- Restrict information about the identities and conditions of lost firefighters until next of kin are notified
