Mayday Protocol

  • Upon receiving a Mayday call, the Incident Commander should immediately stop all non-essential radio traffic and alert all units to the emergency.
  • A Mayday status report from the firefighter should include the firefighter's location, situation, and any other relevant information.

Personnel Accountability Report (PAR)

  • The Incident Commander should order all units to conduct a Personnel Accountability Report (PAR) when a Mayday call is received or when there is any uncertainty about the location or status of firefighters.

Mayday Response

  • If the Mayday status report from the firefighter is not complete, the Incident Commander should dispatch a Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) to the last known location of the firefighter.
  • When calling a Mayday, the first step a firefighter should take is to provide their location and situation.
  • If a firefighter calls a Mayday, the Incident Commander should stop all non-essential operations, alert all units, and deploy a RIC.

Support and Response

  • If personnel know the location of a member calling a Mayday, they should immediately inform the Incident Commander and proceed to the location if possible.
  • Group/Division supervisors and Company Officers should ensure that air management practices are followed to conserve air and prevent unnecessary delays.

Communication Protocols

  • Non-affected personnel should switch to other tactical frequencies to minimize radio traffic and allow priority communication with the Mayday caller and response teams.
  • During a Mayday situation, one person is responsible for coordinating the response and communication efforts.
