Study Notes
All in Mathematics
Mathematics is one of the most fundamental disciplines studied across all ages, cultures, and societies. It encompasses various branches and fields, each with its unique concepts, theories, and applications. Some of the main areas of study within mathematics include algebra, geometry, arithmetic, calculus, statistics, probability theory, and more.
Algebra
Algebra, which means "theory of quantities," deals with mathematical symbols and the rules for manipulating these symbols. This field involves equations, expressions, variables, constants, coefficients, and solving problems using different methods and techniques. For example, you may solve word problems involving linear equations or quadratic equations, find the roots of polynomial functions, or apply systems of equations to model real-world situations.
Geometry
Geometry is concerned with the properties and relationships of points, lines, surfaces, angles, triangles, circles, polygons, and other types of geometric objects. In this branch of mathematics, you learn how to measure angles, distances, areas, volumes, and angles between shapes, and develop strategies for finding coordinates and finding formulas for distance, midpoint, slope, etc..
Arithmetic
Arithmetic is the simplest and oldest branch of mathematics, consisting primarily of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and related operations. It covers basic number facts such as facts from the times table.
Calculus
Calculus is a branch of mathematics often considered the foundation of modern mathematics. It focuses on limit processes, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. Derivatives allow us to analyze rates of change, while integrals let us find areas under curves.
Statistics
Statistics is a discipline concerned with collecting data and interpreting it through mathematical analysis. Statisticians collect sample data and perform statistical tests to help determine whether the hypothesis being tested is true or false with some level of confidence.
Probability Theory
Probability theory provides a framework to describe uncertainty, random events, and patterns. It is used in many practical applications, such as weather forecasting, financial investment modeling, medical diagnoses, and game theory.
All in Science
Science is an ever-evolving process of discovery and exploration driven by human curiosity and a desire to understand our world better. Broadly speaking, there are multiple scientific disciplines organized into four distinct categories: natural sciences (biology, chemistry), social sciences (psychology, sociology), formal sciences (mathematics, logic), and applied sciences (geophysics, engineering).
Natural Sciences
Natural sciences cover the study of physical aspects of the universe like biology, astronomy, physics, geology, meteorology, and ecology among others. These subjects aim to explain phenomena through models, experiments, observations, and systematic measurements.
Biology
Biology deals with living organisms, their characteristics, behaviors, interactions with each other and their environment, and their evolution over time. Topics in biology range from molecular processes (such as cellular and genetics) to complex ecosystems (like ecological niches and food webs).
Chemistry
Chemistry explores matter, its composition, structure, properties, transformations, and the changes it undergoes when interacting with energy and other forms of matter. It's divided into organic chemistry (study of carbon compounds) and inorganic chemistry (study of non-carbon compounds).
Astronomy
Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects, phenomena, and processes outside the Earth's atmosphere. It seeks to explain the nature of the universe, its origins, and its future.
Geology
Geology focuses on the physical structure, substance, properties, processes, and history of the Earth and its other planets. It includes the study of rocks, minerals, soil, water, and the processes that shape them.
Social Sciences
Social sciences study human behavior and societies, covering aspects like how individuals interact with each other and how social structures influence people's lives. These disciplines include psychology, sociology, anthropology, and political science among others.
Psychology
Psychology involves the study of mental processes and behavior, including perception, attention, memory, emotion, personality, and development. It aims to understand the complexities of the human mind and behavior through both experimental and observational methods.
Sociology
Sociology is the study of social structures and institutions, including relationships between individuals, groups, and societies. It examines various aspects of social life, such as social norms, socialization, social stratification, and social change.
Formal Sciences
Formal sciences consist of mathematics and logic, which deal with abstract, axiomatic systems of reasoning and deduction. They provide the foundation for many other areas of study, including natural sciences and social sciences.
Mathematics
As discussed earlier in the 'All in Mathematics' section, mathematics is a discipline focused on numbers, quantity, shape, space, and logical argument. Its principles are used across diverse domains, including physics, economics, computer programming, and even everyday problem-solving.
Logic
Logic studies arguments, reasoning, and deduction - how we can move from what we know to draw valid conclusions based on sound reasoning. It's used in philosophy, artificial intelligence, computer programming, and decision making.
Applied Sciences
Applied sciences combine knowledge from various scientific disciplines with technology and engineering to address specific challenges and create innovative solutions. Examples of applied sciences include civil engineering, environmental science, and geophysics.
Engineering
Engineering applies scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge to design, build, and maintain structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes. There are several branches of engineering, such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, industrial, civil, aerospace, and computer engineering.
Geophysics
Geophysics combines knowledge from physics, mathematics, and Earth sciences to study the Earth's physical nature, internal workings, and processes. It helps us understand natural hazards like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, locate oil reserves, monitor climate change, and explore new resources.
