Math: Understanding Percentage, Rate, and Base Concepts
Math encompasses various concepts that we encounter daily, including percentages, rates, and bases. These concepts form the foundation of problem solving and quantitative analysis across numerous disciplines. Let's explore each concept with examples to deepen our understanding.
Percentage
Percentage is a measure that indicates how much a part represents out of the whole. It can be calculated by dividing a value by another value, multiplying it by 100, and adding the % sign. For example, if you have $100 and want to know what 7% of it is, you would calculate (100 * 0.07) = $7. In this case, 7% of $100 is $7.
Example
Suppose there are 8 apples in a basket and 2 more are added. What percentage of apples will make up the new batch? The number of apples increases from 8 to 8 + 2 = 10. So, the percentage change is (10 - 8)/8 * 100 = 25%. Therefore, 25% of the initial batch of apples is now present in the modified batch.
Rate
A rate compares two quantities that vary together. Rates tell us how quickly one quantity changes when another quantity changes. For instance, miles per hour (mph) is a rate because it tells us how fast something travels during one hour. Miles, the first quantity, varies with hours, the second quantity. To think of mph as a rate, imagine a car traveling faster and faster, covering more miles per hour.
Example
An airplane flies at a speed of 450 miles per hour. How many miles does it cover in 6 minutes? Since 1 mile is equal to 60 minutes, the distance covered in 6 minutes is 450 x 6 / 60 = 90 miles.
Base
In mathematics, a base refers to the starting point or foundation upon which other elements are built. Two common bases used in mathematics are base 10 and base 2 (binary).
Base 10 & Base 2
Base 10 is decimal notation we commonly use, while base 2 represents numbers in binary format. For example, 10 in base 10 is represented as 1010 in base 2. Similarly, 100 in base 10 can be written as 1100100 in base 2.
Example
Convert 25 from base 10 to base 2. In base 10, 25 is (1 * 10^1) + (5 * 10^0). Converted to base 2, it becomes (1 * 2^3) + (0 * 2^2) + (1 * 2^1) + (1 * 2^0), which equals "11001" in base 2.
