    Study Notes

    Fractions

    • A fraction represents a part of a whole.
    • The top number of a fraction is the numerator, and it shows how many parts are being considered.
    • The bottom number of a fraction is the denominator, and it shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
    • A fraction can be simplified by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
    • 1/4 is the same as 25%.
    • 1/2 is the same as 50%
    • 3/4 is the same as 75%.

    Mass and Weight

    • Mass is a measure of how much matter is in an object. It is usually measured in kilograms (kg).
    • Weight is a measure of the force of gravity on an object. It is usually measured in newtons (N).
    • The heavier an object is, the more it weighs.

    Shapes

    • A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles.
    • A square is a rectangle with four equal sides.
    • A circle is a closed shape with all points the same distance from the center.
    • A triangle is a polygon with three sides and three angles.

    Scale

    • A scale is a ratio that compares the size of a model to the size of the real object.
    • A scale model is a smaller version of a real object, usually used for representation or study purposes.
    • The scale of a model is represented by a fraction, e.g. 1:100.
    • A 1:100 scale means that one unit on the model represents 100 units on the real object.

    Problem solving

    • To calculate a fraction of an amount, divide the total amount by the denominator of the fraction and then multiply the result by the numerator.
    • When comparing fractions, look at the size of the denominator. The smaller the denominator, the larger the fraction
    • To check if a shape is an odd one out, compare its properties to the other shapes in the set.
