Study Notes

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

  • If urine burns or stings, it may be a sign of UTI
  • Contact a healthcare provider right away to treat it
  • Advise pregnant women not to reduce fluid intake, as dehydration can lead to UTI

Fatigue During Pregnancy

  • Fatigue is a common symptom during pregnancy, especially in the first 12 weeks
  • Hormonal changes, growing baby, and anemia (low iron) can contribute to fatigue
  • Anemia signs include pale skin, shortness of breath, and fainting spells
  • Nursing interventions: focus on nutrient-rich foods, avoid meal-skipping

Vaginal Prolapse

  • Weakening of vaginal walls, allowing pelvic organs to protrude into the vagina
  • Risk factors: age, parity, vaginal delivery
  • Types of prolapse: Cystocele (bladder into anterior vaginal wall), Rectocele (rectum into posterior vaginal wall), Uterine Prolapse (uterus into vagina)
  • Clinical manifestations: pelvic pressure, fatigue, urinary incontinence, back and pelvic pain

Rheumatic Disorders and Pregnancy

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: joint inflammation, contracture, swelling, erythema, painful motion
  • Complications: permanent joint disfigurement, loss of joint motion, increased bleeding at birth
  • Treatment: corticosteroids, NSAIDs, oral aspirin therapy

Substance Abuse During Pregnancy

  • Opiate abuse: fetal dependence, withdrawal symptoms, small size, fetal distress, meconium aspiration
  • Inhalant abuse: respiratory and cardiac irregularities, fetal oxygen supply limitation
  • Alcohol abuse: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), facial abnormalities, cognitive problems, memory difficulties

Anemia and Rh Incompatibility

  • Anemia: destroyed RBCs faster than production
  • Jaundice: swelling of the baby's body, heart failure, breathing problems
  • Rh incompatibility: RhoGAM injection (arm or backside) to prevent immune system reaction

This quiz covers the signs of urinary tract infections in pregnant women as discussed in Pillitteri's Maternal & Child Health Nursing II textbook. It emphasizes the importance of contacting a healthcare provider promptly and not reducing fluid intake during pregnancy.
