Earthquakes are tremors and vibrations in the crust of the earth. They are mainly caused by the sudden movements of the earth's crust, resulting from the action of internal forces.

Some minor earthquakes can be caused by external factors such as landslides or the bursting of a dam.

The focus or seismic focus is the point in the interior of the earth from where the earthquake tremors originate.
