Contraindications
- A contraindication is a physical, emotional, or mental condition that could make a massage treatment unsafe or detrimental to the client's well-being.
- Examples of common contraindications include abnormal body temperature, acute infectious disease, inflammation, high blood pressure, cancer, fatigue, intoxication, skin problems, pregnancy, and scoliosis.
Physical Effects of Massage
- Massage increases metabolism, hastens healing, relaxes and refreshes muscles, and improves lymphatic system functions.
- Frictions and stroking heighten blood circulation to the skin, causing it to redden slightly.
Mechanical Effects of Massage
- Massage enhances local fluid uptake in muscles, deforms sensory and proprioceptive nerve endings, and stretches or compresses various muscles and connective tissues.
Reflex Effects of Massage
- Massage relaxes and resets muscle tone, causes hyperemia, and warms tissues.
Nervous System
- The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system.
- Cranial and Spinal nerves are made up of somatic and sensory neurons.
Massage Techniques
- Stimulating massage techniques include friction, percussion, strong percussion, and vibration.
- Activation of the sympathetic nervous system is related to stress, and epinephrine and norepinephrine are produced in the adrenal glands in response to stimulation.
Physiological Effects of Massage
- Massage reduces pain by increasing endorphins, enkephalins, and other pain-reducing neurochemicals in the central nervous system and bloodstream.
- Increased blood flow to a massaged area causes better cellular nutrition and elimination.
- Massage increases clients' awareness of where they hold their tension.
Other Key Facts
- A normal body temperature range is from 96.4°F to 99.1°F.
- Varicose veins are abnormally enlarged veins, indicating a condition in which the valves in the veins break down due to back pressure in the circulatory system.
- A hematoma is a mass of blood trapped in some tissue or cavity of the body, resulting from internal bleeding.
- A hernia is a protrusion of an organ or part of an organ, a rupture.
- Clients with severe asthma, diabetes, or any type of heart, lung, or kidney disease should only receive massage with a doctor's note, under the supervision of a physician.
