Maslenitsa, also known as Butter Week or Pancake week, is a traditional Slavic festival celebrated during the last week before Lent. Food

The name "Butter Week" comes from the tradition of using up all the butter, cheese, milk, and other dairy products before the fasting period of Lent begins. These thin, round cakes are typically made with yeast and sugar-sweetened cottage cheese and served with sour cream, honey, applesauce, jam, or caviar. Other traditional dishes include vareniki (dumplings) filled with meat or berries, kielbasa, pierogi, pyzy, koldūnai, and kolachki (cookies).

History

The origins of Maslenitsa can be traced back over a thousand years to ancient pagan rituals dedicated to the goddess of fertility, Perun's wife Dziewanna. Later, it became associated with Christianity when it was incorporated into Orthodox Christian traditions as part of the pre-Lenten season. Over time, the celebration evolved to include diverse elements from different parts of Eastern Europe, reflecting its multi-ethnic heritage.

Traditions

In addition to consuming dairy products and making blini, other customs include going outdoors and enjoying nature, playing games, engaging in folklore and carnival arts, burning effigies of winter, and inviting friends over for meals and gifts. For example, some families erect an ice slides, while others hang up straw decorations shaped like animals, birds, and mythical creatures. In Ukraine, people make colorful paper lanterns to illuminate their village.

Celebrations

The festivities culminate when the effigy of winter is burned on the final day. This symbolizes the triumph of warmth and light over coldness and darkness. After the bonfire, many families gather around the table one more time, sharing reminiscences and toasts, as well as watching the first sun rays of the new astronomical year. On the last day, it is believed that the weather coincides with the weather on this day next year.
