- Graduated as valedictorian of Crozier Theological Seminary in 1951.
- Became pastor of a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama.
- Completed his PhD.
- Was a religious man, and saw racism as a sin against God.
Civil Rights Activist
- Led a city-wide bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, beginning in 1955.
- Founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957 to organize non-violent protests for civil rights.
- Worked with the SCLC to organize Black voters and civil rights protests.
- Arrested at a march in Alabama in 1963, and wrote “Letter from Birmingham Jail” while in prison.
- Led more than 20,000 people for a demonstration at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, where he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.
Legacy
- Contributed to the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
- Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
- Assassinated on April 4th, 1968.
