-
Ancient Period
- Arnis, or Kali, predates bladed weapons, and was used with a large bladed weapon (longer than a knife)
- Possibly derived from Tjakalele of Indonesia, neighboring country
- Bornean datus landed in Panay (Philippines) in 13th century, bringing the fighting techniques
- Filipinos used bows and arrows prior to bladed weapons (in prehistoric times)
- Malay invasions (200 B.C) brought an enrichment to Filippino arsenal weapons
-
Hispanic Period
- Kali was already a fighting style in the Philippines when the Spanish colonized it
- Magellan's chronicler noted Lapu-Lapu (Mactan) being a Kali expert in 1521
- The cane, or stick, (likely hardened wood) evolved as the main weapon, replacing bladed weapons in arnis, due to prohibitions on weapons by the Spanish period
-
Modern Period
- Arnis training methods were changed by the great Remy Presas, to teach without injury
- Modern Arnis is now the best-known and the most systematic fighting art in the Philippines
