Prevention of Pollution by Sewage
- Regulated by Annex IV of MARPOL
- Prohibits discharge of sewage from ships, except:
- At a distance of more than 3 nautical miles from the nearest land
- When the ship is en route and has in operation an approved sewage treatment plant
- Requires ships to have approved sewage treatment plants or holding tanks
Oil Pollution Prevention
- Regulated by Annex I of MARPOL
- Prohibits discharge of oil or oily mixtures from ships, except:
- When the ship is proceeding en route and has in operation an approved oil filtering equipment
- In emergency situations, with permission from the nearest coastal state
