Prevention of Pollution by Sewage

  • Regulated by Annex IV of MARPOL
  • Prohibits discharge of sewage from ships, except:
    • At a distance of more than 3 nautical miles from the nearest land
    • When the ship is en route and has in operation an approved sewage treatment plant
  • Requires ships to have approved sewage treatment plants or holding tanks

Oil Pollution Prevention

  • Regulated by Annex I of MARPOL
  • Prohibits discharge of oil or oily mixtures from ships, except:
    • When the ship is proceeding en route and has in operation an approved oil filtering equipment
